from the Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71781
SB1021-71781r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71781 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. 2-1/2 Gulden, 1964. Utrecht Mint; privy mark: fish. Juliana. PCGS PROOF-66 Cameo. A truly pleasing Proof Gem, offering flashy surfaces and frosted details. No distracting marks are observed, only adding to the appeal of this piece." Queen Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948 in protest of Dutch colonial policy in Indonesia in favor of her daughter, Juliana, who would rule until 1980. New coin types were therefore necessary and were introduced in 1950. This silver 2½ gulden was struck 1959-66. The denomination was afterward converted to nickel. No dates are rare.

Recorded mintage: 2,800,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 15 g, 0.720 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-185, Sch-1100.
