Mexico 1955 5 centavos

This bronze five centavos is the fairly common date of a type struck 1955-69. Minting authorities had been eager to retire the bronze coin (KM 424) for some time and attempted to introduce a copper-nickel five centavos (KM 425) in 1950 which was not a success. In 1970, this type was reduced to 2.75 g (KM 427) and struck in that form until 1976. The portrait is of Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, a heroine of the War of Independence.

Recorded mintage: 12,136,000 (plus 31,114,000 of KM-424).

Specification: 4 g, brass, 20.4 mm diameter, plain edge.
