This 1747 two reales is one of a series struck 1742-47 honoring the reign of Philip V (1700-46). Earlier issues of this reign (1732-41) show the shield as not interrupting the obverse legend. Gilboy[1] notes the date as scarce. This type was also struck with the name of Ferdinand VI, who actually took the throne in July 1746, though Mexico did not know this until much later.
Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 grams, 0.917 fine silver, 0.200 troy oz ASW.
Catalog reference: Cayón-8927, Gilboy M-2-19, KM 85.
