Mexico 1747-Mo MF 4 escudos Fr-14
This specimen was lot 31110 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $35,250. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VI gold 4 Escudos 1747 Mo-MF AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint. Most attractive for the designation, with fully lustrous surfaces displaying comparatively few contact marks and only slight wear on the higher points. A superb example of the rarest denomination for the 1747 imaginary bust series, missing in Gerber and Eliasberg. Even more tellingly, it is also missing in the Banco de Mexico collection, a further testimony of its elusiveness. An iconic and key type, excessively rare and immensely desirable in this lavish preservation. Superior to the Norweb (Christie's Dallas 5/1985, lot 47) and the Caballero de las Yndias (Aureo 4/2009, lot 375 for E18,000) examples, currently the only certified of the type by NGC; definitely a strong candidate for the finest known. The much inferior Calico plate coin recently realized a hammer price of over $17,000 (Marti Hervera 2/2015, lot 612 for E15,000). This better preserved example should realize a healthy sum over that amount. Ex. Ponterio (6/1985, lot 15 for $26,400), From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." This is one of the celebrated rarities of the Mexican colonial series.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW.
