Guatemala SB120-23003r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23003 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 2 Reales, 1747-G J. Guatemala Mint. Ferdinand VI. PCGS VG-08 Gold Shield. For a type that is difficult to find in collectible condition, this example of the scarcer two Reales denomination exceeds many, being problem free, nicely toned with even, honest wear, and exhibiting a bold clear date, mintmark, and assayer letter." This type was struck 1747-53 on dies intended for pillar coinage but, as the mint lacked machinery to cut round planchets, the coins were struck on cob planchets instead. Some effort was made to center them properly, and most have legible dates and mintmarks.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-8925, KM-10; Cal-Type 101 #452.
