Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1336

This specimen was lot 1336 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €120 (about US$159 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR demi-écu aux insignes, 1702E, Tours. 3e réformation. D/ B. à d., cuirassé à l'antique. R/ Ecu de France rond, couronné, brochant sur une main de justice et un sceptre posés en sautoir. Fine griffe. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver half écu of the insignia of 1702, Tours mint, third reformation. Obverse: armored bust right; reverse: crowned round arms of France over the hand of justice and a scepter. Fine scratches, Very Fine.)"

Shown is a demi-écu aux insignes of the Tours mint. Note traces of an undertype; this coin usually comes struck over an earlier half écu, Droulers[2] notes that all known specimens from this mint are overstruck. The obverse die is leftover from the earlier buste du type au palmes. This is a slightly better date.

Recorded mintage: unknown, all rf[2].

Specification: 13.72 g, .917 fine silver, edge lettered DOMINE SALVVM FAC REGEM, this specimen 13,35 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 623, Dr/2 no. 425, Dupl-1534B; Gad-189.
