This specimen was lot 70703 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hamburg. 2 Mark, 1877-J. Hamburg Mint. NGC AU-50. Bold detail and rather lustrous, unmolested fields make this steel gray specimen exemplary for the grade. A superb selection for diligent collectors of German coins." Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of two imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen was the other. She struck silver two, three and five mark and gold ten and twenty mark until that Empire's collapse in 1918. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany. This type was struck 1876-78, 1880, 1883 and 1888.
