This specimen was lot 3297 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €125 (about US$169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"UNGARN, Volksrepublik, 1949-1989. 50 Forint 1968, Budapest. 150. Geburtstag von Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. GOLD. Nur 5.105 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. (people's republic of Hungary, 1949-89, fifty forint of 1968, Budapest mint, on the 150th birthday of Ignace Semmelweis. Only 5,105 examples struck, proof.)"
Hungary went thru many vicissitudes after the collapse of the Dual Monarchy in 1918. Hungary became independent but was shorn of its territories in Slovakia, Transylvania and Croatia. She fell under the dictatorship of Admiral Horthy and was a reluctant ally of Germany during World War Two, for which she was devastated by the Russian Red Army. This coin was issued during Communist rule (1949-89) and was accompanied by a silver 50 forint (KM 582), 100 forint (KM 584), gold 100 forint (KM 583), 200 forint (KM 586) and 500 forint (KM 587).
