This specimen is a copper liard à l'écu struck at the Orléans mint for France in 1789, the year the Bastille fell. It is scarce, being priced by Droulers[1] at triple the common date (1783-W). Its face value was 3 deniers or one fourth of a sol. The type was struck 1777-91 but this is the only known date for this mint.

These images provide an example of what a professional photographer can do for a coin when taking a picture for an auction catalog. This specimen was lot 1327 in Jean Elsen sale 88 (Brussels, June 2006), where it sold for 80 euro. The first images were from the catalog, the second images were done after the coin was purchased; both are of the same coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 3.06 g, copper, 23.5 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 no. 894, Dr/2 no. 627, KM 585.12.
