from Stack's Bowers November 2015 sale, lot 39337
Mexico SB1115-39337r.jpg

This specimen was lot 39337 in Stack's Bowers Winter sale (Baltimore, November 2015), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1668-G. Charles II (1665-1700). NGC VF Details--Removed From Jewelry. Better date for the type. Evidence of being mounted less obvious than light polishing, and with a clear full four digit date and assayer initial and partial mint mark. Lightly toned. Pedigree: From the David O'Harrow Collection." This specimen is a silver cob eight reales struck at Mexico City 1665-1700. Specimens with clear dates are unusual. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to .917 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .931 fine silver, .810 troy oz ASW, this specimen 26.6 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-7536, KM-46; Cal-type-73#269a.
