H3089-31271r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31271 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. Charles II "Royal" 2 Reales 1668 Mo-G XF Details (Holed) NGC, Mexico City mint, By Gerónimo Bercerra. An extremely pleasing presentation of this most challenging issue, thankfully pierced only once in a comparatively inconspicuous location in the legends, while the details appear quite handsomely preserved under a charming stone-gray tone. The only illustrated example of this type-date we have been able to find, as the plate coin in Calico, and unremarkably so, with collectors of this series knowing full well how difficult finding pieces above Fine to VF grades can be. Perhaps just mildly undergraded, and a through-and-through thrilling coin. Ex. Isaac Rudman Collection." This specimen is a silver cob two reales struck at Mexico City 1668-99. Specimens with clear dates are unusual and "royals" are rare. In 1728, cobs were debased from .931 to 0.917 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 6.4 g.

Catalog reference: KM-R34 (Rare), cf. Cayón-7325 (not pictured), Cal-585 (this coin), cf. Sedwick-M20.
