Sincona sale 63. lot 865

This specimen was lot 865 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$627 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Convention, 1793-1795. Ecu de 6 livres 1793 / AN II N, Montpellier. Ohne Punkt nach Livres--Sans point après livres. Selten. Sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. Leicht berieben. (kingdom of France, Convention, écu of six livres of the year 2, Montpellier mint, without dot after LIVRES. Rare, Very fine, Minor flan flaw, Slightly polished.)"

When this coin was struck at Montpellier, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type (KM 615). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 29.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge; this specimen 29.22 g.
