Sincona sale 63. lot 869

This specimen was lot 869 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,065 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, Convention, 1793-1795. Ecu de 6 livres AN II (1794) B, Rouen. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Randfehler. (republic of France, Convention, écu of six livres of the year 2, Rouen mint. Very rare, Very fine, Edge flaw.)"

When this coin was struck at Strasbourg, the ancien régime had disappeared with the trial and execution of the king, who had appeared on the previous type (KM 615). In 1793, as invading armies approached from all directions, the Committee of Public Safety would initiate the Terror. In 1795, following the introduction of the metric system, the first five francs would be issued. Rouen is one of five mints which issued écus in 1794, the year of the Terror. All are rare. The AD date was dropped in favor of the revolutionary calendar.

Specification: 29.48 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge; this specimen 29.02 g.
