France 1806-I 40 francs
The first specimen was lot 4299 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH Premier Empire. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 40 Francs 1806, Limoges. Selten. Kl. Kr. Fast vorzüglich. (France, first empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, forty francs of 1806, Limoges mint. Rare, cleaned, choice extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 23847 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,233.75. The catalog description[3] noted, "Napoleon gold 40 Francs 1806-I, Limoges, XF45 PCGS, nicely toned and fully original, scarce mint for this type." The French empire produced large quantities of gold coins, made from metal looted from countries he conquered. However, nearly all of it was produced at Paris, leaving the branch mint issues quite scarce today. The only other forty francs from Limoges is dated 1807 and is also rare.
Recorded mintage: 6,995.
Specification: 12.90 g, 0.900 fine gold, 26 mm diameter, edge lettered DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE, designed by Pierre-Joseph Tiolier and Jean-Pierre Droz, this specimen 12,87 g.
