Saxony 1657 2 thaler Dav-LS398
This specimen was lot 680 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2 Taler, 1657. NGC MS-63. Johann George II (1656-80). Death of Ferdinand III. Sharply struck, lustrous and exceptionally choice. Finest graded by NGC. Pedigree: Ex: Johann Max Collection. Harold Moller auction, Nov. 2007, lot #878." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. During the interregnum between the death of the Holy Roman Emperor and the election of his successor, the empire was ruled by two vicars, the elector of Saxony and the elector of the Palatinate. The position became ceremonial once the Hapsburgs monopolized the throne but the elector of Saxony often used the event to issue commemoratives, as here. The elector issued a quarter thaler (KM 457), a half thaler (KM 458), a single thaler (Dav-7628), a triple thaler (Dav-LS397), a quadruple thaler (Dav-LS396), a single ducat (KM 463) and a double ducat (KM 464) on this occasion. We may assume he thought it was a big deal.
