This specimen was lot 4433 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,400 (about US$6,053 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM Johann Georg II., 1656-1680. Breiter dreifacher Reichstaler 1657, Dresden, auf das Vikariat. Von großer Seltenheit. Henkelspur, Felder altgeglättet, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Schweizerischer Bankverein 38, Zürich 1995, Nr. 1874. (electorate of Saxony, John George II, 1656-80, triple thaler of 1657, Dresden mint, on the vicariat. Extremely rare, mount mark, fields smoothed, very fine.)"
During the interregnum between the death of the Holy Roman Emperor and the election of his successor, the empire was ruled by two vicars, the elector of Saxony and the elector of the Palatinate. The position became ceremonial once the Hapsburgs monopolized the throne but the elector of Saxony often used the event to issue commemoratives, as here. The elector issued a quarter thaler (KM 457), a half thaler (KM 458), a single thaler (Dav-7628), a double thaler (Dav-LS398), a quadruple thaler (Dav-LS396), a single ducat (KM 463) and a double ducat (KM 464) on this occasion. We may assume he thought it was a big deal.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 88 g, silver, 51 mm diameter, this specimen 86,87 g.
