Künker Auction 439, lot 2537

This specimen was lot 2537 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €300 (about US$413 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSKLEINMÜNZEN, 5 Pfennig 1874 F. Prachtexemplar. Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung Jürgen und Erika Schmidt, Bovenden. Exemplar der Auktion Teutoburger Münzauktion 79, Borgholzhausen 2013, Nr. 3175. (empire small change, five pfennig of 1874, cabinet example, uncirculated.)"

This coin is an copper-nickel five pfennig from a type issued 1874-89 from the Berlin (mintmark "A"), Hannover (mintmark "B"), Frankfurt (mintmark "C"), Munich (mintmark "D"), Dresden (mintmark "E"), Stuttgart (mintmark "F", shown here), Karlsruhe (mintmark "G") and Hamburg (mintmark "J") mints. Under the German Empire of 1871-1918, the denominations of two mark and up were permitted for the formerly independent principalities while the lower denominations (one pfennig thru one mark) were minted to a unified design.

Recorded mintage: 3,562,000, a fairly common date.

Specification: 2.5 g, copper-nickel, 18 mm diameter, plain edge.
