Stack's Bowers 2024 NYINC sale, lot 54329
SB124-54329 rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 54329 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $75,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 5 Rubles, 1798-CM OU. Uncertain Mint in St. Petersburg. Paul I. NGC MS-62. Emanating from the first year of issue, this stunner--surpassed in the NGC census by just three other examples--offers a pleasing strike, alluring color, and great vibrancy remaining. For completeness, a few minor planchet flaws are noted on the obverse, but these do not interfere with the overwhelming wholesome nature that exists. A tremendous opportunity for the advanced collector of this short-lived reign, or even Russian RARITIES in gold more broadly. From the Rothschild-Piatigorsky Collection." The five rubles was reduced in weight from 8.27 g to 6.54 g in 1764, during the reign of Catherine II. This type was struck 1798-1801 and is very rare. It is lower in weight but higher in purity, and so contains the same amount of gold. The denomination was suspended in 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, and not resumed until 1817, when it was restored to the old module.

Recorded mintage: 148,000 (including assayer OM).

Specification: 6.08 g, 0.986 fine gold, 0.192 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-144; KM-C104.1; Bit-1.
