The first specimen was lot 24907 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Paul I silver 5 Kopecks 1798 CM-MБ, MS64 PCGS. Fully struck, with lustrous, near mark-free surfaces beneath argent-gray and gold toning. Rare in this Choice condition." Hundreds of millions of copper five kopeks were issued between the Annensk, Moscow, Sestroretsk, Kolyvan, Ekaterinburg and St. Petersburg mints. Silver issues were much sparser; this is the first type since 1761. Many survive today but few in choice condition. Russia has the distinction of being the first country to issue decimal currency, as 100 kopeks = one ruble. The second specimen was lot 3249 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA: Paul I, 1796-1801, AR 5 kopeks, 1798, a few barely noticeable hairlines, St. Petersburg Mint, AU, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection."
