Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 1902

This specimen was lot 1902 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €550 (about US$745 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, FRIESLAND, Provincie, AR arendsrijksdaalder, 1598. Vz/ Bb. Friese edelman n. r. met klapmuts en zwaard. Kz/ Gekroonde dubbele adelaar met provinciewapen op de borst. Zeldzaam Krasjes. bijna Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Friesland, silver eagle rijksdaalder of 1598. Obverse: Frisian knight in fur cap holds a sword; reverse: crowned doubled headed eagle with the provincial arms on its chest. Scarce, scratches, about Very Fine.)"

This "eagle" daalder was struck 1591-92 and 1597-98. Later, the province used the prinsen rijksdaalder design emitted by the other provinces (see Dav-4829).
