Zurich 1768 thaler Dav-1789
The second specimen was lot 34561 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zurich Taler 1768 AU58 NGC. Type with reverse legend. Auburn toning with a sharp strike. Destined for a quality collection." The second specimen was lot 3756 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Zurich | Stadt und Kanton. Taler 1768, Zürich. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (city and canton of Zürich, thaler of 1768, Very fine-extremely fine.)"
This type was struck in Zurich 1736, 1739-45, 1748, 1751-61, 1767-68 and was one of a series of thalers struck throughout the eighteenth century. Many of the later issues were "city view" thalers. The obverse legend, "MONETA REIPUBLICAE TIGURINAE," means "coin of the Republic of Zurich."
