Zeeland 1617 1/2 cavalier d'or Fr-312
This specimen was lot 61 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,750 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1/2 Grote oude gouden rijder, ZEELAND Provincie 1580 - 1795, 1617, Gold Type I. Ruiter naar rechts boven provinciewapentje burcht .MO. AVR. PRO. CON - FOE. BELG. ZEL.. Kz. generaliteitswapen, jaartal boven de kroon. Uit de Zeeuwse Leeuw collectie. In 1985 voor het laatst door ons verhandeld. RRR. Uistert zeldzaam jaartal Zeer sterk uitgemunt exemplar. Prachtig +. (half golden rider of 1617, province of Zeeland,type I. Obverse: mounted knight charges right, over the provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality, date above. From the Zeeland Lion collection, last handled by us in 1985. Extremely rare date. A very sharply struck specimen, extremely fine or better.)"
This type was struck 1609-11, 1614-18, 1621-31, 1634-35, 1638-41, 1644-48 and is very scarce. The Gelderland halve gouden rijders appear more often. We have titled the page using the coin's French name, demi-cavalier d'or.
