Schulman sale 347, lot 402

This specimen was lot 402 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,673 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "½ grote oude gouden rijder. 1631. Type I. Ruiter naar rechts boven provinciewapentje • MO • AVR • PRO • CON – FOE • BELG • ZEL • burcht. Kz. Generaliteitswapen CONCORDIA • RES • PARVÆ • CRESCVNT • I63I burcht. RRR. Zeer fraai. uit veiling Schulman 29 van 10 nov. 2003, no. 29. (muntgewichtdozen v.Borssum Buijsman, deel ii; coll h.K. Berghuijs, deel V; coll chr. Bouwkamp)." The catalog calls this coin a "half gold rider," a term American numismatists reserve for the similar coin of the eighteenth century valued at seven gulden. Of course, demi-cavalier d'or, a French term, means the same thing. This rare type is listed for Zeeland for 1609-48.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 5 g, .920 fine gold, this specimen 4.92 g.

Catalog reference: Delm-888; V. 79.2; Fr-312 (124); KM 19.
