The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia were ruled by the Omanis from 1698 until 1860 when it gained independence from Oman. It subsequently fell under control of the British in 1890, and became part of Tanzania in 1964, when the later gained independence.

This specimen was Lot 22844 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013) and sold for US$1,292. The lot description reads: "Barghash ibn Said Riyal AH1299 (1882), AU58 NGC, an attractive example of this classic African crown with abundant mint luster. Very scarce in this grade."

Recorded mintage: 60,000.
