Zanzibar 1908 20 cents

The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia were ruled by the Omanis since 1698 until 1860 when it gained independence from Oman. It subsequently fell under control of the British in 1890, and became part of Tanzania in 1964, when the later gained independence.

This specimen was Lot 22846 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013) and sold for US$4,406. The lot description reads: "Sultan Ali bin Hamud 20 Cents 1908, MS64 NGC, nicely toned with sharp details, an attractive example of this very scarce type struck while the Island of Zanzibar was a British Protectorate."
