The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia were ruled by the Omanis since 1698 until 1860 when it gained independence from Oman. It subsequently fell under control of the British in 1890, and became part of Tanzania in 1964, when the later gained independence.

This specimen is a bronze 1 pysa, type issued one year only (AH 1299).
