Zanzibar 1908 10 cents

The islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia were ruled by the Omanis since 1698 until 1860 when it gained independence from Oman. It subsequently fell under control of the British in 1890, and became part of Tanzania in 1964, when the later gained independence.

This specimen was Lot 22838 in Heritage sale 3005 (Long Beach, May 2009), where it sold for US$2,300. The lot description reads: "Sultan Ali bin Hamud 10 Cents 1908, MS64 RD NGC, fully brilliant, a gorgeous example of this rare type from the Heaton Mint Archives Collection."
