This type was struck for the newly formed republic of Yemen in 1963. It is accompanied by one, five, ten and twenty buqsha pieces and a silver riyal. Later in the sixties, after the final defeat of royalist forces, the currency was reformed so that 100 fils = 1 riyal. The sprig on the obverse is from the coffee plant, native to Yemen and Ethiopia.
