This type was struck for the newly formed republic of Yemen in 1963. It is accompanied by one, two, five, ten and twenty buqsha pieces. Later in the sixties, after the final defeat of royalist forces, the currency was reformed so that 100 fils = one riyal. The sprig on the obverse is from the coffee plant, native to Yemen and Ethiopia.
