Sincona sale 97, lot 1402

This specimen was lot 1402 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Würzburg, Bistum, Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, 1719-1724. Goldgulden o. J. (1719), Würzburg. Neujahrsgoldgulden. Selten. Gutes sehr schön. Übliche Justierspuren. Minimal gebogen. Rand bearbeitet (ev. aus Fassung). Exemplar der Auktion Spink 24004, London, April 2024, Los 357. Exemplar der Sammlung Augusta Collection of European Gold Coins, Auktion Spink 23006, September 2023, Los 560. (Germany, bishopric of Würzburg, John Philip Francis of Schonborn, 1719-24, undated goldgulden, circa 1719, Wurzburg mint, for the New Year. Rare, Good Very Fine, Usual adjustment marks, Minimally bent, Edge tooled (probably ex mount).)"

This specimen was offered again as lot 2550 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,400 CHF (about US$2,110 including buyers' fees). While ducats from Wurzburg were the standard 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, the goldgulden were only 3.25 g, .770 fine. The New Year's goldgulden which were occasionally struck in Wurzburg are consigned to the Unusual World Coins by the SCWC. The territory was annexed to Bavaria in 1803.
