Wurzburg 1719 5 ducats
This specimen was lot 242 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,640 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Würzburg, Bistum, Friedrich Karl von Schönborn, 1719-1746. 5 Dukaten 1719. Auf seine Wahl. Stempel von G. W. Vestner. Brustbild im Ornat nach rechts. Rv. Krummstab, Schwert und Füllhorn gekreuzt vor einem Lorbeerzweig, im Hintergrund die Stadtansicht von Würzburg. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Starke Henkel- und Tragespuren. (bishopric of Würzburg, Frederick Charles of Schonborn, 1719-46, five ducats of 1719, on his election. Dies by G. W. Vestner. Obverse: Half-length portrait in ornate to right. Reverse: Crozier, sword and cornucopia crossed in front of a laurel branch, in the background the city view of Würzburg. Very rare, Very fine, Mount mark and traces of wear.)"
This type is not listed in the SCWC or in Friedberg. The general fabric, the mount mark, the slight wear contrasted with the many rim bumps, suggest that this was issued, worn and saved as a medal. The bishop elected in 1719 was Johann Philipp Franz, not Friedrich Karl as stated in the catalog description.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: gold, this specimen 17.19 g.
