Oels in Silesia in 1648

This specimen was lot 286 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €9,500 (about US$12,324 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"WÜRTTEMBERG-OELS, HERZOGTUM, Sylvius Friedrich, 1664-1697. Dukat 1676 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1675 geändert), Oels. Geharnischtes Brustbild r. mit umgelegtem Mantel//Vierfach behelmtes, verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen mit Mittelschild. GOLD. RR Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, min. Doppelschlag, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 260, Osnabrück 2015, Nr. 2557. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg-Oels, Sylvius Frederick, 1664-97, ducat of 1676, 1676/5 overdate, Oels mint. Obverse: armored and mantled bust right; reverse: quadruple helmeted and quartered arms with escutcheon. Very rare, minor planchet defects, slightly double struck, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Silesia was under Austrian rule until the 1740's. The duchy of Oels, formerly one of the Munsterberg estates, fell to a junior branch of the dukes of Württemberg in 1647 and was ruled by them until the whole region was conquered by Frederick the Great of Prussia during the War of the Austrian Succession. This type was struck 1674-76.
