Oels in Silesia in 1648

This specimen was lot 885 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 11,000 CHF (about US$13,536 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Württemberg-Öls, Herzogtum Sylvius Friedrich, 1664-1697. Reichstaler 1675, Öls. Münzmeister Samuel Pfahler. Büste mit Löwenkopfschulter und grosser Perücke rechts. Rv. Vierfach behelmtes Wappen zwischen 16 – 75 und S–P. Sehr selten. Etwas unregelmässig getönt. Sonst fast FDC. (Duchy of Württemberg-Öls, Silvius Frederick, 1664-97, thaler of 1675, Oels mint, mintmaster Samuel Pfahler. Obverse: armored, peruked bust to right; reverse: quadruple helmented arms divide date and mintmaster's initials. Very rare, toned, choice uncirculated.)"

Silesia was under Austrian rule until the 1740's. The duchy of Oels, formerly one of the Munsterberg estates, fell to a junior branch of the dukes of Württemberg in 1647 and was ruled by them until the whole region was conquered by Frederick the Great of Prussia during the War of the Austrian Succession.
