West Germany 1955-G 5 mark KM-115
This specimen was lot 1572 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 150 (about US$234 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, République fédérale, (1949- ), AR 5 Mark, 1955 G, Tricentenaire de la naissance de Ludwig von Baden. Rare. Petites taches. Superbe. (Federal Republic of Germany, 1949-, silver five mark of 1955, tricentennial of the birth of Ludwig von Baden. Small nicks, extremely fine.)"
This type honoring the soldier von Baden was the third commemorative issued by the West German government after World War Two. This and other commemorative issues of the fifties were all minted in limited numbers and are expensive today. Commemorative five marks were minted to this weight standard until 1975, when the weight was lowered to 5.3 grams.
