Venice (1796)-FB ducato Dav-1574
This specimen was lot 2057 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €360 (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, VENEDIG, Lodovico Manin, 1789-1797. Ducato o. J. (um 1789). Kl. Schrötlingsriß, fast vorzüglich. (republic of Venice, Lodovico Marin, 1789-97, undated silver ducat. Edge cracks, very fine.)"
This type was issued 1789-97. None bear dates but the frequent turnover of assayers allows collectors to narrow down the time of issue to a year or two. Venice also issued silver ducatoni, scudi and talleri. By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors. In 1797, Napoleon traded Venice to Austria in exchange for Milan; nobody bothered to consult the Italians.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 22.31 g, .826 fine silver, .592 troy oz ASW.
