Künker sale 403, part of lot 1826

This specimen was part of lot 1826 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €50 (about US$66 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SEDISVAKANZ 1939. a) 10 Lire 1939, Rom. 10,03 g. Stempel von A. Mistruzzi. Pagani 702. b) 5 Lire 1939, Rom. Stempel von A. Mistruzzi. 2 Stück. Herrliche Patina, Stempelglanz. Die Münzen zeigen das Wappen des Camerlengo (Kämmerer) Kardinal Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, der als Pius XII. (1939-1958) zum Papst gewählt wurde. (Papal States, sede vacante of 1939, ten lire of 1939, Rome mint, and five lire of 1939, Rome mint. Two pieces, superb patina, uncirculated. The coins bear the arms of the cardinal camerlengo Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, later elected pope Pius XII (1939-58).)"

Normal relations with the Italian government were not restored until Mussolini signed a concordat in 1929, granting the Pope sovereignty over Vatican City. Coinage began that year, struck at the Rome mint. This is a sede vacante, struck while the papal throne was vacant. It is common and accompanied a silver ten lire. A five lire (KM 28) was later struck for Pius XII. It matches the weight and fineness of a pre-WWI Italian lira or French franc.

Recorded mintage: 40,000.

Specification: 5 g, 0.835 fine silver, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 5,00 g.

Catalog reference: KM 20, Ber-3372, Pagani 703.
