Jean Elsen sale 160, lot 2535

This specimen was lot 2535 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €825 (about US$1,045 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, UTRECHT, Provincie, AR halve dukaton (halve zilveren rijder), 1776. Vz/ Ridder te paard n.r. boven gekroond provinciewapen. Kz/ Gekroond Generaliteitswapen gehouden door twee leeuwen. Licht gereinigd. Prachtig. (Netherlands, province of Utrecht, silver half ducaton or silver rider of 1776. Obverse: standing knight with sword and provincial arms; reverse: crowned arms of the Generality. Lightly cleaned, extremely fine.)"

The SCWC notes a half ducaton with a reeded edge for 1761-94 (KM 115.1) and a flowered edge for 1761-76 (KM 115.2, shown here). Not having the specimen in hand, we don't know what edge it may actually have.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 16.39 g, 0.941 fine silver, 36 mm diameter, this specimen 16,11 g.
