Utrecht 1760 ducaton Dav-1832
This specimen was lot 72780 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. Ducaton (Silver Rider), 1760. Utrecht Mint. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. A mostly handsome example, with good steely brilliance and much exciting beauty throughout. Attractive despite the noted damage." This specimen is one of a type issued for the province of Utrecht 1739-94. Examples exist with a cabled edge (shown here) or a flowered edge (KM 92.2). Each province of the Netherlands issued its own coins; besides Utrecht, there are coins for Deventer, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Holland, Overijssel, West Friesland and Zeeland, not counting various local issues. The Netherlands were swallowed up in Napoleon's empire and after his fall, reconstituted as a kingdom.
