Uruguay H3064-31770r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31770 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 20 Centesimos 1855 AU58 Brown NGC. Far nicer than most examples of this often-crude issue, with a bold portrayal of the sunface design and surfaces that are free from the major flan defects that are so commonly encountered. While not a major deterrent to the eye-appeal, a few meandering pinscratches around the denomination are worthy of note." Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the nineteenth century and many issues are rare; this one is scarce. It was replaced by a French made copper type of similar design issued 1857. Similar five centesimos were also issued.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 21 g, copper.

Catalog reference: KM 7.
