United States 1902 10 dollars
This specimen was lot 1683 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,066 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ÉTATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1902. Nettoyé. Très Beau. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1902. Cleaned, Very Fine.)"
This specimen is one of a type struck at the Philadelphia mint 1839-1907. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60, 1879-1906), San Francisco (1854-89, 1892-1907), Carson City (1870-84, 1890-93) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is common in all grades thru Uncirculated, despite the low mintage. By this time, paper currency had supplanted gold coins in circulation and most of the mint's production languished in vaults in the United States and overseas.
