Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 916

This specimen was lot 916 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €750 (about US$967 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ETATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1903 S. Très Beau. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1903, Very Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck at the San Francisco mint 1854-89, 1892-1907. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60, 1879-1906), Philadelphia (1839-1907), Carson City (1870-84, 1890-93) and Denver (1906-07). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is common in all grades thru Uncirculated, altho gems are scarce.

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
