Künker sale 386, lot 5760

This specimen was lot 5760 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €480 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"VEREINIGTE STAATEN VON AMERIKA, Ku.-Cent 1885, Philadelphia. Indian Head. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung PF 65 BN (6494817-004). Polierte Platte. (United States, copper cent of 1885, Philadelphia mint. Proof, graded NGC PF-65BN.)"

The Indian Head cent was issued starting in 1859, superseding the Flying Eagle cent. The reverse was modified in 1860 and the alloy revised in 1864, after which the type was produced essentially unchanged until the introduction of the Lincoln cent in 1909. The 1885 is a slightly better date. The specimen shown is a proof.

Specification: 3.11 g, bronze, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.

Recorded mintage: 11,761,594 plus 3,790 proofs.
