This is a common date of a popular and longlived type, first introduced in 1859, the reverse modified in 1860 and the weight reduced and alloy changed in 1864. It was struck until 1909. Over a billion were made, certainly the first American coin type to achieve that milestone and perhaps the first in the world.

Recorded Mintage: 2,262 in proof plus 66,833,764 for circulation.
