United States 1880 cent

from the Mountain Groan Collection

The Indian Head cent was issued starting in 1859, superseding the Flying Eagle cent. The reverse was modified in 1860 and the alloy revised in 1864, after which the type was produced essentially unchanged until the introduction of the Lincoln cent in 1909. The 1880 was the highest mintage date since 1864 and marked a run of ever more common dates stretching to the end of the series. The specimen shown is a proof.
