Sincona sale 87, lot 3250

This specimen was lot 3250 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,559 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"USA, 10 Dollars 1850, Philadelphia. Liberty head type. No motto. Large Date. PCGS AU58."

This specimen is one of a type struck without motto at the Philadelphia mint 1839-66. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60) and San Francisco (1854-66). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. The 1850 is a scarce, but not a rare date.

Recorded mintage: 291,451 (large date and small date).

Specification: 16.71 g, 0.900 fine gold, .483 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
