Jean Elsen sale 150, lot 1509

This specimen was lot 1509 in Jean Elsen sale 150 (Brussels, March 2022), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ETATS-UNIS, AV 10 dollars, 1849. Très Beau. (United States, gold ten dollars of 1849, Philadelphia mint. Very Fine.)"

This specimen is one of a type struck without motto at the Philadelphia mint 1839-66. Issues are also recorded from New Orleans (1841-60) and San Francisco (1854-66). In 1866, the motto "In God We Trust" was added to the reverse. This date is common in all grades thru About Uncirculated altho Gems are scarce.
