PCGS VF-30 ~ White Oak River Collection
US 1843C 5 dollars rev.jpg

This represents the last year of the Large Date/Small Letter variety. Although the mintage nearly doubled, problem-free examples are extremely tough to locate. The Charlotte mint struck this type 1839-44, 1846-61 but always in small quantities. Few survive in choice condition; this, combined with the romance of the Lost Cause, makes the products of this mint expensive and hotly pursued.

Recorded Mintage: 44,201.

Specification: 8.36 g, 0.900 fine gold, .242 troy oz AGW, reeded edge, 21.6 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 69.
