US 1842C 5 dollars rev.jpg

The year 1842 was a transitional period for Charlotte Half Eagles. A small part of the mintage (4,595) comprised of the Small Date variety, along the lines of the 1840 and 1841 dates. Partway through the year, the mint switched to the Large Date design, yet retaining small lettering on the reverse. The Small Date variety is the rarest coin in the Half Eagle series, and the second rarest coin produced by the Charlotte mint. As for the Large Date variety, although not as rare as the its Small Date cousin, it is a very scarce coin in its own right, and is quite rare to find problem-free.

Recorded Mintage: 27,432, mostly Large Date.

Specification: 21.6 mm diameter, 8.359 g, 0.900 fine gold, .2418 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
