Sincona sale 11, lot 1750

This specimen was lot 1750 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,857 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Florenz Leopoldo II. di Lorena, 1824-1859. Francescone 1846. Vorzüglich-FDC. (grand duchy of Tuscany, Leopold II of Lorraine, 1824-59, francescone of 1846. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was issued 1845-46 and 1856-59 and is rather scarce. A francescone, equivalent to the old piastra or tallero, was worth four fiorini or ten paoli. In the 1850's, Tuscany was ruled by a Hapsburg prince, Leopold II.
