from the Stack's Bowers 2018 ANA sale, lot 23196

This specimen was lot 23196 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Lira, 1803. NGC MS-63. A pleasing example of this one year type with deep olive tone over glossy fields that display few heavy marks. Rarely seen on the market. Ex: Heritage sale 3006 (Long Beach, September 2009), Lot #22534." This scarce type was struck again in 1806 (C-47.2). Charles Louis was a grandson of Charles IV of Spain. He was king of Etruria (one of Napoleon's puppet states) 1803-07, duke of Lucca 1824-47 and duke of Parma 1847-49, after which he lived in exile as a private citizen, dying in 1883.
